'''Neighborhood Bike Works''' is a youth development organization in West, North and South Philadelphia serving neighborhood youth from 8 to 18. Our main shop is at St. Mary’s Church, 40th and Locust Walk, on the University of Pennsylvania campus. Our Haddington neighborhood shop is on Salford St around the corner from 60th and Vine, our North Philadelphia shop is on Susquehanna Ave at Broad, and our South Philly shop is on 5th Street at South Street. Since 1996 we have offered classes on bike repair and bike safety after school, on weekends, and in the summer. By completing a series of classes and fixing up used bikes donated by the community students can earn a bike for themselves with a helmet and a lock. In addition to providing a positive activity for young people we introduce them to the fun, the health benefits, and the freedom that come with cycling in the city.
'''Neighborhood Bike Works''' is a nonprofit educational organization in Philadelphia that seeks to increase opportunities for urban youth in underserved neighborhoods in greater Philadelphia by offering educational, recreational, and career-building opportunities through bicycling; it also promotes cycling as a healthy, affordable, environment-friendly form of transportation. Started in 1996 as Youth Cycle & Recycle, a program of The Bicycle Coalition of Greater Philadelphia, Neighborhood Bike Works incorporated as a non-profit in July 1999. We expanded to the Haddington neighborhood in 2002, and opened the North Philadelphia Neighborhood Shop in 2009. The North Philly shop is also our sales and service location, and operates a fully functioning repair shop. In 2010, our South Philadelphia satellite program opened a location on 5th Street between Lombard and South. Today, we hold programming at four permanent sites, our satellite location in Norristown, PA, and in several public schools and community centers.

Teaching Resources

Bike Valet

In addition to community participation and fundraising for our youth programs, we also provide valet bike parking as a means to employ select graduates of our programs. We are often contracted by other groups to do Valet Bike Parking for events that are expected to attract large numbers of cyclists. Frequently, we are able to employ a few youth for credit hours or a small hourly rate and a share of any tips collected.
