In the winter of 2007, the New Haven Bike Collective was formed to address the growing need for affordable bikes in New Haven and to use the abandoned bikes left by Yale students for the residents of New Haven. Since 2008, over 100 bikes have been fixed up and repaired, donating them to community groups including: Integrated Refugee & Immigrant Services, Centro SanJose Community Center, Farnham Neighborhood House, Chabaso Bakery, High School in the Community, and many walk-involunteers. We received a start up grant from New England Grassroots Environment Fund, and support and stipend employment from Dwight Hall at Yale. | |||

Our primary goal is to salvage neglected or unwanted bicycles, thus preventing otherwise useful material from leaving the community to be recycled, junked, or sold. We resurrect these rescued bicycles primarily through our build-a-bike program. The build-a-bike program allows New Haven community members the opportunity to learn a useful skill they can have for the rest of their lives, and earn a bicycle in the process! We provide a welcoming space to learn about maintenance and repair and are committed to being anti-racist, anti-sexist, and class-conscious. The New Haven Bike Collective endeavors to empower community members with knowledge, skills, and tools that will permanently improve their lives. |
