In December 2004, three friends held an open meeting to discuss a community wide problem: bicycle repair services at for profit shops were too expensive and time consuming.  We wanted to fix our own bikes with collectively owned tools.  When the power went out at that meeting, the 60 of us gathered there huddled together and lit the room with blinky lights so we could continue shouting about our visions for community service, empowerment, and change!  Together, with the support of local businesses and artists, we created a nonprofit tax exempt organization dedicated to creating cooperatively owned bicycle repair shop.  Eight months later, with the help of the East Atlanta Kids Club, SouthStar CDC, and Don Bender, Sopo acquired its shop space in East Atlanta.  Two years after moving in, Sopo shut down, revamped, reopened, and hired its first paid Executive Director.  Since then, we have doubled our shop activity.  We are on the verge of developing new and exciting programing that will expand our reach and help make Atlanta a cleaner, safer, and healthier place for all!

History

In December 2004, three friends held an open meeting to discuss a community wide problem: bicycle repair services at for~profit shops was too expensive and time consuming. We wanted to fix our own bikes with collectively owned tools. When the power went out at that meeting, the 60 of us gathered there huddled together and lit the room with blinky lights so we could continue shouting about our visions for community service, empowerment, and change! Together, with the support of local businesses and artists, we created a nonprofit tax exempt organization dedicated to creating a cooperatively owned bicycle repair shop. We are on the verge of developing new and exciting programing that will expand our reach and help to make Atlanta a cleaner, safer, and healthier place for all!

SoPo is named for South of Ponce de Leon Road.
