These were times of increasing sensitivity to environmental concerns,  public health challenges of obesity, diabetes, heart disease, and asthma, and socio-economic fragmentation due to faster traffic and highways dividing neighborhoods. Truthfully, not much has changed, because culture is hooked on the concept of speed=efficiency=good, but with new strategies to offer choices for people ready to make a change, as well as engaging people where they're at.. not ready for a big change, but testing the waters of possibilities, such as recreational cyclists trying more functional trips, such as car-commuters trying public transit just once, or a few times, such as walking or rolling a wheelchair from point A to B...  -->
