Back Alley Bikes is a collectively-run community bike space whose mission is to provide cycling education and services with a focus on youth development, sustainable practices, and community access. Back Alley Bikes has been operating since 2001, and has offered a variety of programs during that time. Currently it offers a Youth Earn A Bike Program, A Kids Ride Club, as well as a year-round Adult Mechanics Class, which teaches adults how to maintain and repair bikes. Back Alley Bikes also offers a volunteer night twice a week for adults, activities largely consisting of parts sorting, bike wrangling, and the recycling of bicycles. Back Alley Bikes is a non-profit bike shop that offers its programming at low-to-no-cost. It is able to do this by earning money from the sale of used bicycles sold through it's sister shop, The Hub of Detroit.
