General Information

Recycle Ithaca’s Bicycles is a program of the Southside Community Center. We are a community bike program that has operated in Ithaca for nearly 20 years. RIBs accepts donations of unwanted bicycles, effectively rerouting them from landfills. Volunteers and RIBs staff refurbish the bicycles to good working condition and redistribute them to community members. RIBs provides Ithaca youth and adults alike with a safe, structured environment, where people of all ages can learn about bike repair and working cooperatively and constructively with others.

The two main programs offered at RIBs are RIBs Open-Shop and RIBs Hands-On Bicycle Maintenance and Repair Clinic. These programs provide opportunities to learn bicycle mechanics and safe riding skills. All of our programs are open to both youth and adults and require a sliding-scale nominal fee. However, no one will be turned away for lack of funds. We simply ask that you volunteer a set amount of time for the services you request.

RIBs OPEN-SHOP

Saturdays 1-4

RIBs Open-Shop is a drop-in program that provides an opportunity to earn reconditioned bicycles, learn bicycle mechanics, or maintain already owned bicycles with knowledgeable assistance. The most important resource we offer our participants is a safe, structured but fun environment with a focus on cooperation. Participants and staff share technical knowledge and personal experience, building self esteem for youth and adults alike.

RIBs Hands-On Bicycle Maintenance & Repair Clinic

Tuesdays & Thursdays 6-8

The RIBs Hands-On Bicycle Maintenance & Repair Clinic is a series of classes and/or individual workshops which provide a hands-on educational opportunity, covering all the fundamentals of bicycle maintenance and repair. No previous knowledge is required or expected. Currently, there is no fee for the clinic. Clinics have several benefits. Graduates provide RIBs with more experienced volunteer help during Open-Shop. Knowledge gained from the clinics helps graduates become more self-sufficient cyclists.
