According to Facebook, this shop is permanently closed.

From their website in 2019: "In early January 2019, we received notice that our lease would be terminated in April 2019. Over the past year, we have not been able to find any alternative locations for relocating. Its been a 12 year journey from start-up to beloved community bike shop, and we are sad that the end is coming very soon. We'll continue updating our situation on our Facebook and other social media pages the best we can. As we go through our shut-down procedures, expect unexpected schedule changes, and reduction in services offered, including labor and donation acceptance. Please call us at (510) 995-1478 for current hours. Thank you. "

Changing Gears is a non-profit community bike shop located on the former naval air station in Alameda, California. It’s fiscally sponsored by Earth Island Institute in Berkeley.

Changing Gears offers used bicycle sales, full-service repairs, paid job training for formerly homeless adults, earn-a-bike opportunities for youth and adults, a community repair shop, and volunteer opportunities for all.

The mission is to empower local communities by offering recycled bicycle services that are safe, vibrant, creative, and self-sustaining.
